Remember back in late May 2009, when seemingly overnight the North and Southbound streets in Times Square were turned into pedestrian lounge-rooms with green streets and plastic chairs and tables?
The results are in, and those newer metal chairs and tables are going to get an upgrade to permanent furniture.
It's all part of the Green Light for Midtown project spearheaded by Mayor Bloomberg and implemented by the NYC DOT*, where the goals are to make the streets safer and to reduce congestion where Broadway creates a major intersection, like Times Square, Columbus Circle, and Herald Square.
Here are some of the results:
Northbound travel speed - throughout West Midtown improved 17% compared with 8% in East Midtown. So that's a 9% improvement overall. |
Southbound travel speed - 2% fall in West Midtown while East Midtown showed an increase of 3%. |
Eastbound trip speed - increased by 5%. |
Westbound travel speed - increased by 3%, based on a 9% increase in the affected area and a 6% increase in the control area. |
Bus travel speeds - 6th Ave is 13% faster and 7th Ave is 2% slower. |
We read the entire 45 page report and have insider tips on the best and worst crosstown streets if you're in a hurry.
Here's a tidbit for your next cocktail party - taxis make up about 45% of all vehicles in the study area, which is 5th to 9th Aves from 23rd to 59th Street.
