Last week Mayor Bloomberg announced new initiatives to make street parking in NYC easier. Here are his proposals:
Install Smart Parking Meters: – via your cellphone, you'll be able to see all the available street parking. Just drive to the spot and pay on your cellphone when you get there, and you'll get a text message later just before your meter expires. Can this really work? It will certainly save the hassles of driving around for a spot and cut down on pollution. The only hitch is arriving at a spot only to find that someone else has already taken it.
Reduce Penalties for Outstanding Parking Fines – apparently, NYC hasn't been able to collect $700 million in overdue parking fines since 2001, and that amount would pay the salaries of 7,000 police officers. To encourage people to pay the fines, Bloomberg proposes reducing (not necessarily eliminating) the penalites, as other cities have done.
Decrease Alternate-Side-of-the-Street regulations – what we’ve all been waiting for! Those folks who practice musical cars twice a week can’t wait for this.
